The next WABX free concert will be held at the WSU Tartar Field on June 21 with Savage Grace, a group from Reprise records and Catfish, if they can re-schedule their tour. The first concert on May 24 drew over 8,000 folks. ABX, which just installed a new 473 foot tower high atop the David Stott Building, stays in tune with the people. Also, station manager Detz was called by this paper regarding complaints that a series of ads running for a local boutique were racist (stereotypes of Chicanos, Poles and Chinese); Detz quickly agreed and said they would be dropped.
The station is sponsoring a “WABX Nite at Hair” for the benefit of the Drug Withdrawal Program at Lafayette Clinic. Tickets at a buck apiece were sold out in one day.
Speaking about Lafayette, researchers there were doing experiments with marijuana supplied by the Federal government and producing results the staff knew were inaccurate. A clinical test of the government grass disclosed it was lower quality than any of the Iowa weed that was here last summer. The researchers improvised and solved the problem. Guess tricky Dick saves all the Panama Red for him and his friends.
Tactical Mobile Unit pigs have been riding three in a car in the Warren-Forest area. When most cities are utilizing more one-man patrols, the Motor City tries harder. Their main function seems to be harassing freaks and giving parking tickets. Ptl. Dennis Kitchen of the TMU seems to be individually charged with keeping cars from parking at the corner of Lodge and Warren.
White Panther Party national headquarters in Ann Arbor received a tape of Weatherwoman Bernardine Dorhn’s “A Declaration of War” printed in the last Fifth Estate [FE #106, May 28-June 10, 1970].
Detroit’s most often seen bumper sticker, “Bring ALL the Troops Home Now” is available from the Detroit Coalition, 5705 Woodward, Det 48202 for 50 cents.
Notice to pig politicians: all of your bullshit campaign posters pasted up in the Warren-Forest area will be ripped down. Ask Sheriff Lucas, the first recipient of our scorched earth policy. Brothers and sisters in other areas should institute similar tactics.
All Detroit public libraries will suspend Saturday service this summer from June 15 until mid-September.
We’re famous! The city Plan Commission voted unanimously to declare W. Canfield between Second and Third an historic district.
Detroit’s Grand Funk Railroad has sold over 400,000 copies each of their first two albums and have advance orders of over a quarter of a million for their newest album, “Closer to Home”.
Attention “adolescent agitators”: the National High School Conference is set for Chicago, June 22-27. Purpose is to further “student solidarity and organization.” Location is Some Church, 5655 S. University, Chicago; call 415/843-7500 for more info.
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader will deliver the convocation address to Wayne’s 219 Law School graduates on June 20. Hope he tells them all to join the National Lawyers Guild.
A recent Supreme Court decision supporting a Wisconsin court which said students could not be expelled from school for wearing long hair will strengthen the suit of the local American Civil Liberties Union against several suburban school districts which have no-hair regulations. Detroit has no dress or hair codes, but the ACLU took on the outlying districts including Wyandotte, Taylor, Southgate, Dearborn Heights and several others.
On Memorial Day, Detroit Mayor Roman S. Gribbs held an open house in the city’s official mayoral residents, the Manoogian Mansion. An estimated 1,500 persons turned out to tour the palatial home on the Detroit River and view sights like the infamous $67 table cloth and the sauna bath. But, to insure that he wouldn’t throw a party and have nobody come, the mayor saw to it that many city employees were paid overtime and holiday pay to show up. One Department of Parks and Recreation supervisor, for instance, collected time-and-a-half for attending. Other city workers got double-time for making his honor feel popular. Kind of sad when you have to pay folks to come to your house.
Checking it all out.
