It’s good in America Dep’t.: Cheryl McCall, ex-rebel editor of the South End and now hippie-writer in residence at the Detroit Noose’s Other Section, will reportedly become editor of a new paper put out by the Model Cities Program. Her boss, the U.S. government, will pay her $12,000 per year…

The 218-day strike by Fruehauf office workers, 80% of whom are women, ended June 24 with ratification of a two-year pact. The strike, marked by police violence, won the workers a 5% wage increase, increased wage classifications and a wage re-opener at the end of the first year. Lost was the demand for a union shop. Both Fruehauf and the union claimed victory in the settlement…

The Wayne State student newspaper, The South End, was the object of an attack by state legislators, who approved a budget for WSU $93,000 less than requested—the amount of money earmarked for the paper…

Bob Cobb, proprietor of Cobb’s Corner Bar, the “movement’s” favorite grog shop, is expanding the storefronts adjacent to the bar on Cass on Willis into a mini-Plum St., which was his brain child four years ago. Already in are a book store and a boutique with a gallery and a pizzeria yet to come…

Liberal-turned-censor Detroit councilman David Eberhard had his plans for a city ordinance prohibiting obscenity, and defamation of the flag and religion shot down by Detroit corporation counsel William P. Doran. The word is that since no agreed upon definition of obscenity exists that the proposed law would be unconstitutional…

Counterfeiting department: Beware rip-off artists selling uppers and downers which turn out to be completely neutral substances. Best advice: leave pills to doctors. Also, some punks are going around selling fake printed tickets to the Goose Lake Park Rock Festival. The only legitimate tickets are a special plastic chip made in Las Vegas that have a metallic center that can be read by a scanner set up at the entrance gate…

The vice-president of the Republic of New Africa, Milton Henry has bought a $58,000 home in all-white Bloomfield Hills for him and his family. Henry says he still believes in a separate black nation, but wanted a comfortable place to live. The Michigan Civil Rights Commission has issued a directive to employers that it is illegal to advertise for job openings by sex. At issue is help-wanted classified ads in newspapers that segregate openings by sex. Newspapers are not affected. They can run them as long as they don’t originate. The Women’s Liberation Coalition of Michigan has been bringing pressure on the papers to stop accepting such ads…

Pig department: The unidentified mod squader rushing the cameraman in the last issue has been named by a Fifth Estate reader as Bob Dawson. A brother from Keep On Truckin’ Co-op was in court on a phony charge brought against him by the mod squad and he gave them the issue with their pictures in it. They didn’t think it was funny…

Bad news: Washtenaw County Sheriff Doug Harvey and his son dumped on a Honda 750 recently. Doug got a broken ankle and his son a bad cut out of the accident…

Security forces have been doubled around the posh Lafayette Park swimming pool with signs posted warning of “armed guards.” The reason is to combat a wave of nude late-night swim-ins complete with weed and Ripple.
