The DAILY COLLEGIAN (the school newspaper), was the subject of attack at the Wayne University campus this past month. The Wayne Committee to End the War in Vietnam, Students For a Democratic Society, Young Socialist Alliance, National Student Association, Young Democrats and the Wesley Foundation have published two issues of an 8-page paper, the Wayne Reply, to counter the ineffective and inaccurate coverage of campus political events by the DAILY COLLEGIAN.
Three demands were put forth by the REPLY for the COLLEGIAN to meet:
“(1) Give full and objective coverage to all public events sponsored by campus recognized organizations.
“(2) Publish all letters to the editor that do not go beyond a specific length and indicate deletions due to space limitations.
“(3) Allow campus organizations to write weekly columns in the pages of the COLLEGIAN.”
The first issue of the paper coincided with a day that the COLLEGIAN didn’t publish. It was well received by the student body and further sponsors were received. With the publication of the second issue of the REPLY the DAILY COLLEGIAN began meeting the demands put forth above.
Vartan Kupelian, editor of the DAILY COLLEGIAN said in the first recognition of the REPLY in the school newspaper “We have met these objectives (above) and have met them since September, and will continue to meet them in the future.”
“These demands were not met in the past and if they had been there would have been no need for the WAYNE REPLY. It has been directly the publication of our paper that has served as a catalyst and forced the COLLEGIAN to meet these demands,” according to a spokesman for the REPLY.
