A dinner to celebrate the Fifth Anniversary of the American Civil Liberties Union will be held at the Rackham Building on Saturday, April 29.
The dinner will feature a tribute to Dr. Walter G. Bergman, a Detroit educator for more than 40 years and a leader in civil liberties organization in Michigan.
Senator Wayne Morse will be the principal speaker at the event. Lieutenant Governor, William G. Miliken, Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and Charles Cogen, President of the American Federation of Teachers, will share the speakers platform. Dr. William R. Keast, President of Wayne State University, will serve as toastmaster.
The evening will begin with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. in the lounge of the Engineering Society. Dinner will follow at 7:00 p.m.
The Rackham Memorial Building is located at 100 Farnsworth at Woodward.
Tickets for the dinner are available at $10.00 per plate at the office of the American Civil Liberties Union at 1600 Washington Boulevard Building in downtown Detroit. Phone reservations may be made by calling 961-4662.
Dr. Bergman has for more than 40 years been a champion of freedom of speech and association. Typical of his dedication and total commitment to the cause of civil rights and liberties is the fact that after his retirement as a Detroit educator, he, and his wife, Frances, were participants in the first Freedom Ride in the south. He still suffers from the effects of a beating received from a mob at that time.
