Detroit Love-In Set for April 30

Fifth Estate # 28, April 15-30, 1967

“Hey people now smile on your brother.

Let me see you get together and love one another right now.”

The Detroit tribes will gather together for the first time in many moons for the first modern Michigan Pow Wow on Belle Isle, Sunday, April 30.

The gathering, which will begin at noon and continue through into the night, will center on the Belle Isle bandshell and spread out from there. Everyone will be safe and in the company of friends, in many cases friends he never knew he had. Detroit, the city of instant paranoia, will overcome its self-induced fears on that day and move into the future with the fire of love burning through its citizens’ beings.

Bright costumes and tiny bells will be in order, accompanied by beads and feathers. Bring food to be shared, musical instruments, incense and bananas, children and grandmothers. A dozen rock and jazz bands are scheduled to play if the city fathers will approve.

The Be-Ins in San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles have made it clear that people can get together and love one another right now with no adverse consequences. 25,000 people gathered in Golden Gate Park, 15,000 in Central Park, and over 10,000 in Elysian Park, and the people in those places had no trouble at all with each other or with the police. The scoffers kept saying “it can’t happen here,” but our strength and numbers will show them that they don’t have to feel that way and that there’s no reason ever to be negative.

If you can’t find a way to get there, call Trans-Love Airways or come to the Trans-Love office by 11:30 Sunday morning and they’ll get you there on time. Fill your cars with people — if you can get six people in your car, pack it full. If you don’t have six people to fill it with, come to the Trans-Love Station, 4857 John Lodge, and pick somebody up.

The Love-In is for real. It’s not a game. It’s your chance to meet people, break bread with them, dance and sing and have a good time in the open air. If you have any questions, call the Fifth Estate or the Trans-Love office, 8316840, for information. We are here to help you. You are here to help yourselves.
