The Serve The People Coalition is beginning to get some concrete results from its efforts.

Almost $300 was collected by the coalition at the killer WABX free concert July 19. The money will be split between the People’s Defense Committee of East Detroit (see “Youth News” in this issue) and JUSTICE/FAST.

The special STP meeting set up to discuss a “community tax” with the managers of the Eastown and the Palladium has been postponed from July 20 to the 27. The results of that meeting will be in the next STP News and on WABX news.

It should be made clear by the Serve The People Coalition that “community tax” is a misnomer. The coalition is asking for the cooperation of the managers of the Eastown and the Palladium to donate a small sum (around $35 per night’s operation) to go to non-profit community functions (such as a legal defense fund).

This is an opportunity for the promoters of these rock events to show concern for the people that support their business. At this writing the STP coalition has no plans for a boycott or similar actions if these promoters refuse to contribute to the much needed community functions. The Coalition is only asking for a donation from these people, not an involuntary “community tax.”

At the last STP meeting, the coalition set up a Legal Defense Committee. The purpose of the committee will be to coordinate contributions and to set up machinery for contacting lawyers, bondsmen, etc.

As well as money, we need people that are willing to work on this committee. If you want to serve the people in this manner, contact Peter Werbe or myself at the Fifth Estate office at 831-6800.

The next STP meeting will be July 28, Tuesday, at the Unitarian Church, Cass at Forest, McCollister Hall, at 7:30 p.m. It’s open to anyone interested in getting together to Serve The People.
