We Are Barbarians

Fifth Estate # 109, July 9-22, 1970

“The nation’s young revolutionaries feel they are modern-day barbarians attacking the diseased Rome of the 1970s”

—Major General Glenn C. Ames (California National Guard Commander) addressing 1,500 pigs from across that state last month.

Grass—$300 an Ounce

A couple of weeks ago, narc pigs seized 1,500 pounds of marijuana at a farm in Oakland County. Reports say that it was hauled from Mexico to the U.S. in a camper.

The Detroit News proclaimed it to be an historic 8 million dollar bust. Broken down into street sales, that would come to well over $300.00 an ounce. Maybe, if rolled skinny, 50 joints could be gotten from an ounce. That’s $6.00 a ‘j’. Wonder who their dealer is?

If you read the News, you … don’t buy any dope from the pigs.

War on ROTC

The Pentagon and the Administration are very uptight about the war on ROTC. In the last three months alone, more than 30 ROTC buildings have been burned to the ground, and enrollment in ROTC has dropped 41% since 1966-67.

They have good reason to be uptight: one-half of the army’s officers are recruited from ROTC programs. So the more ROTC is attacked, the more we aid the Vietnamese and the people of the world in their struggle against U.S. imperialism.

Oakland Mall

Jim Okragleski, a brother from Warren, was hanging out at the Oakland Mall with some friends, on Friday, June 26. Up strides the local rent-a-pig, complete with gun, riot helmet and toy shoulder stripes. “What kind of paper you got there?” Jim took the Fifth Estate he was carrying out of his pocket. The pig grabs it and begins reading intently, with idiot fascination. When he came to the word “pig,” he freaked, ran Jim off the property and told him not to come back with the paper.

This isn’t the first time that brothers and sisters have been hassled by security guards at the Oakland shopping center. Most of these guards are pathetic people, forced by unemployment into the only thriving business in the city—law and order—and tripping on their badges and firepower. But the real pigs, obviously, are the people that hire them. The store owners who hire so few cashiers that you’re always waiting in some supermarket line, but then hire a security guard to hassle you at the door.

Jim was pissed off at the treatment he received. He called the Troy police, who said that they knew of no statute prohibiting the possession of papers like the Fifth Estate on commercial property. In the near future there will be other freaks up at the Mall with Fifth Estates.

We’re pissed off too. Thinking of suing the shopping center owners who always give our people a hard time for carrying or selling the paper. If you get hassled for having the paper on you, give us a call at 831-6800.

If there are pig hassles where you hang out; if there is free food and music you want to let the people know about; if there is a wildcat in your plant; if there is a riot at your beach; if you and your people are getting it together— anything that is news, give the Fifth Estate a call or drop in and we’ll check it out and try and get it in the paper.

The News Must Serve the People

On Friday, July 3, the People’s rock group—the Buffoon—had some of their equipment ripped off. The two major pieces were a Vox amplifier and a Vox bass guitar. If any brothers or sisters see or hear of this very rare equipment, please contact Rob Roy at 831-6110
